A desk is an item of furniture with a flat top and a number of legs, used as a surface for working at, consuming from or on which to place things.Some frequent types of desk are the eating room desk, which is used for seated persons to eat meals; the coffee desk, which is a low desk utilized in residing rooms to display objects or serve refreshments; and the bedside desk, which is used to place an alarm clock and a lamp. There are also a range of specialized types of tables, equivalent to drafting tables, used for doing architectural drawings, and sewing tables.

In modern instances it is usually adjacent to the kitchen for convenience in serving, although in medieval instances it was usually on a completely totally different flooring level.
