A canopy mattress is a decorative mattress somewhat much like a four-poster bed. A typical cover mattress normally features posts at each of the four corners extending four toes high or extra above the mattress. Ornate or ornamental fabric is usually draped throughout the higher space between the posts and a stable swath of cloth could create a ceiling, or cover directly over the bed.
A four-poster mattress is a mattress with four vertical columns, one in each nook, that assist a tester, or higher (normally rectangular) panel. This tester or panel will usually have rails to permit curtains to be pulled across the bed. There are a selection of vintage four-poster beds extant dating to the 16th century and earlier; many of those early beds are extremely ornate and are created from oak. An instance of such an early 16th-century four-poster resides in Crathes Citadel, which was made for the original fortress house owners within the Burnett of Leys family.
