A canopy mattress is an ornamental mattress considerably much like a 4-poster bed. A typical canopy mattress normally options posts at each of the 4 corners extending 4 ft high or more above the mattress. Ornate or ornamental fabric is often draped throughout the higher house between the posts and a stable swath of material may create a ceiling, or canopy directly over the bed.
A 4-poster mattress is a mattress with 4 vertical columns, one in each nook, that support a tester, or higher (normally rectangular) panel. This tester or panel will usually have rails to permit curtains to be pulled across the bed. There are a variety of antique 4-poster beds extant courting to the sixteenth century and earlier; many of these early beds are extremely ornate and are constructed from oak. An example of such an early sixteenth-century 4-poster resides in Crathes Citadel, which was made for the unique fort homeowners in the Burnett of Leys family.
